ANSWERS

What is Carolina Connection DSL service?

Carolina Conneciton DSL gives you high-speed Internet access by converting your existing analog phone line into a high-speed digital phone line. Using ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology, Carolina Connection DSL delivers up to 1.5 Mbps per second connection rates (which is up to 50 times faster than a standard 28.8Kbps dial-up modem).

How does Carolina Connection DSL service work?

DSL technology takes advantage of your existing phone line. While regular phone calls are transferred at relatively low frequencies, DSL data is transmitted at much higher frequencies. Both types of transmissions can occur simultaneously, without interference.

How fast is DSL Service?

Really fast! DSL service provides connection speeds that are up to 50 times faster than a traditional dial-up connection.

Is my Carolina Connection DSL speed guaranteed?

Connection speeds are not guaranteed and will depend on many factors such as the length and condition of the telephone wires connecting your house to your central office and general conditions on the Internet at any given time. As such, Carolina Connection offers a "best effort" service. That means we don't offer any throughput guarantees, but we will always do our best to provide you with the fastest connection your specific conditions will allow.

What does an "always on" connection mean?

Carolina Connection DSL gives you a dedicated connection between your computer and your phone network. There is no dialing in; no waiting to get online; and, no busy signals. The Internet is always a click away.

Will I get busy signals?

No. You will never get busy signals with DSL because there is no dialing involved. Instead, you are directly connected to the Internet via a dedicated connection that is used only by you.

Can I talk on the phone and use DSL Service at the same time?

Yes, you can talk on the phone and use your DSL service at the same time, on one phone line. There's no need to add an additional phone line for Carolina Connection DSL service.

Am I allowed to make a network with my Carolina Connection DSL connection?

Yes, but Carolina Connection does not provide network technical support. Carolina Connection provides technical support for the DSL line and the primary PC on which it was installed.

  • 133 MHz (or faster) Pentium-based processor (or equivalent)

How does Carolina Connection DSL compare to a dial-up connection?

Carolina Connection DSL is better than dial-up because:
  • It's up to 50 times faster than a standard 28.8 modem
  • It's always on with no busy signals
  • It allows voice over the same phone line, making data-only lines obsolete
  • It's more secure, due to having no shared bandwidth with other users

How does Carolina Connection DSL compare to Cable Modems?

Cable modem services are "pooled" or share access, meaning customers share the Central Exchange Office's (CO's) bandwidth with other customers. DSL has its own unique dedicated bandwidth. Cable modem upstream traffic will in many cases be slower than DSL, either because the particular cable modems are inherently slower or because of speed reductions caused by contention for upstream bandwidth. The big difference between DSL and cable modems, however, is the number of lines available to each. Today there are approximately 12 million homes that can support two-way cable modem transmissions, and while the number will grow steadily, it will not catch up with the number of installed telephone lines for many years. Additionally, many of the older cable networks are not capable of offering a return channel; consequently, such networks will need significant upgrading before they can offer high bandwidth services.
