Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 MWHS-2 was organized and designated as Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 on 1 July 1971. Since 1971, the squadron's mission has remained the same. The Deuce has supported many Wing deployments and the deployment of Wing Headquarters' personnel all around the world. Throughout the squadron's history, it has had Marine Corps Air Station Cherry point as its permanent base. From 1 January 1956 to 30 June 1971, the squadron was designated Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron 2. The squadron, which performed the same functions as it does today, was assigned under the direct command of Marine Wing Support Group 2. When the majority of Marine Wing Support Group 2 was re-designated as Marine Air Control Group 28 and separated from the headquarters, the squadron remained behind to perform its critical functions and received its current designation. The squadron was first designated on 1 October 1947. At that time it was known as Headquarters Squadron 2. Of interest, during World War II there was in existence a unit designated Headquarters Squadron, Marine Aircraft Wing, 2d Marine Division, designated 15 April 1941. This squadron would eventual become Headquarters Squadron, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. This squadron, therefore, has no linear connection with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2.
