JAMES GARLAND (JIM) BROWN

Jim was born in Brooklyn, NY, and grew up on Long Island, and in the suburban town of Ridgewood, NJ. He obtained a Navy ROTC scholarship, and attended the University of South Carolina, receiving a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. Following three years in the Navy, Jim obtained a scholarship to the Chrysler Institute of Engineering, and received a Masters in Automotive Engineering in 1960. Jim worked in Engineering positions in the Navy (FL, VA, NY), Chrysler Corp. (Detroit area), Martin Marietta (Baltimore), and in Engineering and Management positions with DuPont (Camden SC, Waynesboro VA, Wilmington DE, Chattanooga TN, Martinsville VA, and Harrisburg PA). After taking advantage of a special one-time-only company-wide early retirement opportunity offered by DuPont in 1985, Jim operated a management consulting firm in York, PA. He was then offered an opportunity to do a financial and operational turnaround at a Healthcare Facility in Naples, FL - and stayed for six years. Finding Florida too far from the children and grandchildren, and having friends living in Fairfield Harbour, Jim and Carole decided to retire again, and came to New Bern in 1993. This fit Jim's interests in sailing (Sea Pearl 21) and paddling, and Carole's interests in heirloom sewing and things Victorian. They found a lovely Victorian-style home in Deer Run, with a beautiful large magnolia tree out front, on a nicely wooded half-acre. They have found New Bern to be an excellent area for "retirement", and have made many new friends in the community and at church. The weather is a nice compromise between Florida and "Up North", and the travel time is only about one-third to children in Knoxville TN and York PA. There are also lots of educational opportunities here; Jim took a Computer-Assisted Drafting course, and Carole took several computer courses at Craven Community College. Jim then obtained his Real Estate Salesman and Broker licenses and joined Realty World Gary Barker & Associates. Later Jim also obtained his Contractor's license this has better equiped him to meet the needs of his clients. Jim would love to have the opportunity to help you find a new home.
